Douglas Adams gave it to us as the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything — after a computer named Deep Thought spent seven and a half million years thinking about it, and after everyone noticed the Question had been left in another room. The Guide’s public face treats that not as trivia, but as orientation: answers without questions are mostly harmless theater. Still: the number stuck, and for good reason.
Mathematically it is quietly elegant. Take the first four primes — 2, 3, 5, 7 — and multiply three of them: 2 × 3 × 7 = 42. Leave 5 out of the party and you get something that feels like a wink from the integers themselves. It is also 6 × 7, which is how schoolchildren meet it before culture hijacks the brand.
Geography joins the conspiracy with a straight face: Washington is the 42nd state of the United States. Mountains, rain, and a coastline that looks like it was drawn by someone who understood both coffee and contingency plans. If a state were going to be numbered like an answer, that one would do.
Culture, of course, piles on. Jackie Robinson wore 42. A rainbow has a classic angle near 42 degrees. The angle you tip a tower before it tips back at you in nightmares is… nearby enough that engineers get nervous. None of that proves anything.
